I just realised something...

Posted by Tangerine - October 3rd, 2022

Hey everyone. I just realized something as the year is coming to an end.

I've only uploaded 2 new songs this year. "The Swing Of Things" was made last year and uploaded this year. The bloodlust one isn't mine. I just helped a little with it. The only two posted this year are the carnival one and the attempt at an EDM one.

I swear I haven't stopped making music. I've just been working on ambitious projects that take multiple months to create. Also, I've been learning a lot about the technical side and doing a lot of practice things to familiarize myself with my DAW and specific plugins. I have a few I can post but my standards have already risen past having them be acceptable. I'll probably make something small for October since it's my favourite month, but I've got exams that I am busy studying for.

Anyway, just wanted to pop in and make sure you all knew I was still alive :)

You’ve took the words out of my mouth.
I’m slowly beginning to realize that I essentially pumped out basically 40 songs that are all around the same quality from 2020-2021. I really don’t think I did the states justice if I had to be honest. This is why for these last few songs it’s taken me so long to make each one: I want to make sure each one is up to par or better than the last one, and as expected, this means that over time it becomes increasingly difficult to rise past my last song. I expect the series to finish sometime in the first half of next year, at which point I said I said I’d do the alphabet. Contrast this pace when I would upload 10 songs a month (in 2020). At some point I’m probably going to have to go back and remake them all.

Well that was a rant. I guess I saw this post of yours as a good time to explain my future endeavors. Best of luck on yours!

I'm in a very similar boat as you. I'm constantly trying to one-up my songs, yet it takes me so long to make them that I get sick of them and don't end up posting them. I must stop myself from listening to my works in progress before I finish them. But yeah, our rising standards are why we aren't producing as much as we used to. But yeah, your lack of uploads scares me slightly because I fear the day you stop uploading (whether it be in a couple months or in 70 years).

@Tangerine I also listen to my songs before posting them. Now with West Virginia I think I may have overdid it slightly and I got sick of the melody after the first like month and a half, and it may have hurt the final product. Good news is, I bought the bass and guitar expansion for my next song, in an effort to diversify the way my songs sound.

When it comes to me not uploading, we have a long time before that happens. Don’t expect them to speed up much though, I’m going to attempt to continue to raise my own standards.

Yeah, we have to walk a fine line between having reasonable standards for ourselves and becoming perfectionists. Being too sloppy and not being sloppy enough are two traps people fall into. It's important for us to find an equilibrium between the two. I'm likely only gonna start something new when the holiday season comes. Maybe dedicate more time to music as an apology for going missing for half a year haha.

@Tangerine I mean, I also went missing half a year besides 1 song. Just don’t have the time I had before I guess. But it’s like you said to me, you don’t owe us anything. I don’t post music for the sake of my audience; my audience comes to me for the sake of my music.

Yeah, that's true. I really gotta listen to my own advice haha.

The fewer you make the better they're bound to be hmm? In a way the less you post the more impressive it is, I tend to rush things, can't rush perfection really...

You're alive!!! Woo! Happy New year too!

With how long I've been gone, the thing I release next better be a masterpiece haha. I guess it sort of makes sense to rush things on this website since I feel like the way things work values quantity over quality. Quantity is good for reaching people and quality is good for keeping people :).

XD Aren't they all already though?

Yeaah it definitely feels that way with creative content overall these days! Just cause there's so much competition I think, people push themselves to stay active as to keep their fanbase interested, since you get the impression there's just new stuff coming out all the time, BUT if you look at the most followed artists it seems it's really the opposite, the most popular ones seem to value quality over quantity too. In the end I think everyone does really. It's easy to follow people for quantity too if you take a liking to those people, and the stuff they make, but the things that REALLY leave a lasting impression aren't those frequent things, they're the rare ones, by the mastermakers with the patience for perfection.

But you summed that up way better than I did in just a sentence there! Quantity is good for reaching people and quality is good for keeping people for sure. Should read through the entire comment before I start responding. XD

Haha, you're too kind. Those who can produce quality and quantity have basically won the art industry haha. Those who manage to produce something quickly but not too quickly to where it negatively impacts the quality of what they're making. It's very tricky and I don't think I'd ever be able to do it.

Yeaah there are those too! The more you do something the better/faster you become with it of course, though still seems like there's a line somewhere, only so fast you can do things and still have those things be unique and memorable.

For sure for sure. Need to find that balance to prosper... it's probably a different ratio for everyone too, no matter how much you've mastered your craft.

Yeah, I agree completely. For some, working fast comes easier for others, and the same for quality. One person's rushing could be the same as another person taking the time and effort into making something with more quality. I guess we're all humans and we each have to find out own balance between the two :/

Fo shizzle. It's impressive to see what some people manage at what they consider a 'relaxed pace'. That would totally burn out the average individual. Then again it gets easier when you do what you truly have a passion for, and stay in shape, and live well, optimal lifestyle for optimal individual efficiency teir...

Totally agree. Feels like in a big way that's what life is all about too. Just figuring out the balance. In everything.

Yeah, lifestyle plays a huge role in your productivity. Probably why I only produce a song once every 3 months haha

Haha and why I pretty much only manage to make stuff every October, for sure... started at a local gym yesterday though so things finna change on my part! Hopefully! And you can do it, whatever productivity schedule you wish you had!

Maybe it's my own productivity schedule that's getting in the way. I'm caught up doing actually healthy stuff instead of fluffing around on fl studio all day :/

Woaaah, well in that case you're living the life! Maybe that's what I have in wait myself then, a health lifestyle that'll totally skew up my creative priorities and take all the time I would expect to have available for other things will fall away...

So far at least it seems to be working the other way. Feeling unusually focused on... everything. Just more efficient with all I usually do online.

Haha, I just gotta be more balance with what I delegate my time to. Gotta spend more time working on my music. I don't want to slowly fizzle out my passion for it. I'm the same with being more efficient online. I think things are just easier and more manageable.

Ah for sure, big problem with day jobs that get in the way of passion projects too. :) Ideal way to focus would be make money on said focus, but would the focus of said focus change then I wonder...

That's cool. It's pretty amazing what a little exercise does to your mind and coordination too, you don't realize what you're missing when you're just not working out properly.

Yeah making money would be ideal, but I don't see it happening for me with my music anytime soon. I still have heaps to learn before I can start doing proper commissions and collaborations.

Yeah, I agree, exercise is such an underrated thing. It genuinely works wonders on the mind and body.

Ah I think you're on a level where you could, just seems like competition's the big issue these days, need to find a niche or just really get involved and promote yourself with intensity to be seen. So much good talent out there... or slow but steady just build up the rep until it's easier to do so. :)

True that!

Yeah, marketing and promoting yourself is quite a big thing in the audio world. Unfortunately for me, I don't have the time or the money to do something that could kickstart a career. I guess for now and probably the future, I'll just chill here with the few friends I've made and just make music to share with you lot. Maybe I might help with the making of a game with my music, who knows.

But what about you? What are your future plans and ambitions with your music? I know hip hop is quite a hard side of music to get into.

As long as you're enjoying it, money or no that's really the big thing. :) Maybe we could collab on something this October? I do daily verses then, always fun to get involved with new people; try different instrumentals for them.

Yeaah I'm in a similar boat I suppose. I'd like to do more on the side but time's limited, and during winter especially motivation and energy as well. For now I'm focused on at least recording a month's worth of material every October, and mixing/mastering that material into more proper mixtape form, and as the material amounts who knows... if opportunities come my way I hope I'll take them. Focus right now is more so just sorting things out IRL.

I write all the time, just need to get better habits in regard to recording; collaborating; really getting involved for more of the year.

Yeah, I feel you. I also tend to lose motivation and energy around wintertime.

When October rolls around (or whenever you are free) I'd be more than happy to collab with you. Our styles are wildly different but I'm sure we could work something out :). I could use the collaborating experience haha. That and I also think it would be fun.

Even in New Zealand huh, does it get darker then too there? Figured you guys had enviably high sunshine levels year round. :P At least for me it seems it's the lack thereof clearly that most affects my energy, even if I try to keep up on d-vitamin supplements all year, alas, not enough. Soon as that big bright orb once again brights up our days though...

Woo, it's a plan then, hopefully, if all is as it should be for both of us at that time! Wildly different styles seem like a prerequisite for the most interesting collabs. ;) Looking forward to it!

Yeah, the sunlight intensity stays more or less the same throughout the year. We only really have two seasons. Winter (rains more often) and summer (rains less often and gets a bit warmer). I think the main thing for me is that during winter it gets dark around 4-5 pm and in the summertime, it's still light at 9 pm. I assume it's like that everywhere, but that's likely what I think affects my productivity the most.

Yeah, sounds like a plan. I look forward to the collab!

Ah interesting. Do you like rain otherwise? Do you ever have monsoon-like levels of rain there? As for the dark I guess it's not so different for us then, a little, but not THAT much. :) November-January the sun goes down around ~3PM here, but it's usually cloudy, so it feels darker, doesn't snow much around Stockholm either, autumn's longer, so it's often muddy and gray. Further North you don't see the sun at all for about two months, but on the flipside you have midnight sun all summer, and snow makes everything feel brighter otherwise. Seems like it all evens itself out a bit. But yeah, winter's not my favorite season. XD I didn't realize y'all had similar issues in the Southern Hemisphere, that's where I dream of being this time of year... grass is always greener on the other side hmm.

*thumbsup*! :)

The grass is gonna be super green in nz after these past few days of storms. For some reason, the New Zealand gods decided to make it downpour in the middle of summer. It's been so bad that parts of Auckland have been flooded car height https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jan/28/new-zealand-flooding-auckland-deaths-missing-record-rainfall

I usually like the rain, but it's a little much at the moment haha. I'd normally say it's a good idea to spend your winter time here, but not at the moment haha.

The grass is gonna be super green on this side *thumbsup*! :)

Then the grass really is greener on the other side! XD But woah, that looks chaotic... are you affected personally by any of this? Hope you're in a more elevated area.

We've had some floods too (not where I live, but Sweden) recently but not like this... seems like weather around the world is getting a bit crazy these days. Planet finally revolting against decades of our (hu)manhandling it.

Haha thanks for your concern, but my house was fine. Since mine is close to the ocean and on slanted ground, the water just washed down to the ocean.

Yeah, it really does seem like the weather is trying to destroy us all. The fires in Australia and America are insane. I remember one time, an Australian wildfire was so strong that the smoke air blew all the way over to New Zealand and caused where I lived to have yellowish orange air.

There's an image in this article that depicts what it was like pretty well https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-50969488

All we can really do is prepare for possible disasters and hope that they don't happen. Expect them to happen and hope that they won't.

I hope Sweden is doing alright. Also, I like the pun :)

Nice. :) Sounds like a fine place to live too. Open view of the ocean?

Woah that looks... still pretty cool in a way, but not when you know it's smoke. Did it smell like smoke too?

Both the US and Australia have really been handling their natural resources badly too, a lot of coal and mining, deforestation, deep drilled irrigation in California, feels like the natural disasters do somewhat reflect the level of exploitation these areas face. In Sweden we have a pretty unsustainable wood industry too, and wildfires are all the more common, same in Russia, I'm really hoping we see these things as warning signs on what needs to change, the way we lead our industries seem to have pretty dangerous long-term consequences.

Mmm, prepare but also try to prevent I hope. :) We really can make a difference. Early on during the pandemic suddenly larger cities around the world were smog-free, just no traffic, seemed to show that if we just stop doing things clearly impact our environment in a bad way then it heals. It doesn't take long, just need to learn to live differently IMO.

Well it is alright still, no major catastrophes here yet, fortunately still a largely unexploited country compared to other parts of the world. :) Appreciate it!
